Technology and Education The idea of integrating technology (like computers in every classroom and an overhead projector that is connected to the teachers computer) into education is a relatively new idea, and when I first started researching the topic I tried to look for the adverse effects of technology and education. Through my research I have decided that integrating technology into the classroom is indeed a good idea. Even though some teachers and students have a hard time working with the new technology many schools are starting to use, the adverse effects of technology do not compare with all the benefits of integrating technology into education. The Ameritech Electronic University School Classroom is a recently developed facility at Kent State University. The goal of this project is to give students in Kindergarten to 12th grade a chance to work with the latest technology (Drew par. 2). The classroom is equipped with 12 networked computers, a scanner, a printer, videoconferencing cameras connected to several computers, digital still-frame cameras, camcorders, and a VCR (Drew par.2). The goal of this project is to see what advantages or disadvantages would surface from having students work in a technologically advanced setting. The researchers who were conducting this experiment would observe and tape the classroom dynamics. The first major success of this program was that both the students and the teachers felt comfortable using the hardware and software by the end of the allotted time. At first the teachers indicated that they were somewhat ill-prepared to work in the Ameritech classroom but by the end of the semester they all indicated they were vary deft in working with the programs. Following Approaches to the Study of Politics Essay

An approach is to deal with a situation or problem in a particular way. It is also the means by which something is reached. It is the angel form which one views political problems. It is a criteria for searching for the questions to ask. A criteria used to analyze political data. It can be implicit or explicit in what it explains. Some reasons why approaches are used in the study of political science is because it helps us to be more analytical and also helps suggest hypothetical relationships among political forces. The historical approach deals with political thinkers such as Machiavelli, Vico, Montesquieu, Savigny, Maine, Seeley and Freeman. It lays emphasis on the use of historical evidence for proper study of political situations. The reason for the use of this approach is that all political institutions have a long record of their rise and growth and their present form may be well understood in context of their history. This approach does not only explain the past but also enables us to draw dependable conclusions and also it provides us with basic principles for interpreting the future. Some strengths of this approach are that the value of historical approach enables us to make sound generalizations and we may also call them authentic by virtue because they are based on past evidence. Secondly the historical approach is always open to verification. Since it is based on gathered facts of history we may test the validity of conflicting ideas if needed. Lastly it gives us a sense of history than warns us against repeating blunders of the past. History becomes a lesson for the present generation .It enlarges our mental horizon, improves the perspective and builds up an attitude towards events. Some scholars have listed some problems facing the historical approach to the study of political science. Some of these scholars are James Bryce. He says the historical approach is often loaded with superficial resemblance. As such historical parallels may sometimes be illuminating, but they are also misleading in most of the cases. Also Sidgwick mentioned that political science is to determine what ought to be so far as the constitution and action of the government are concerned and this end cannot be discovered by a historical study of the form and functions of government.  The sociological approach emphasizes that social context is necessary for the understanding and explanation of political behavior of the members of a community. The sociological approach deals with the traits of individuals that are transmitted from one generation to another generation. It also deals with the culture of the people. Some strengths of this approach are that it cannot be criticized for being narrow because it is because it is a very broad approach. Due to its broad nature it cannot be ignored during empirical study. A weakness of this approach is that it is feared by most political analysts that it may convert politics to a branch of sociology. Psychological approach is an approach that came into being when political science moved close to the discipline of psychology. This was done in modern times by Graham, Wallas, Charles Merrian, Harrold Lasswell and Robert Dahl. It is the study of political science made by political writers in a way so as to deal with the role of emotions, habits, sentiments, instincts and ego that constitute essential elements of human personality. A strength of this approach is that it is the right approach enabling us to study politics with the help of psychological tool. It helps throw more light on political science. This approach is criticized as partially correct because it does not take into consideration some essential elements covered in some approaches. Secondly this approach deals with normative attributed in an empirical political theory that is it deals with b elief systems. The structural functionalist approach has proven to be very useful particularly in the comparison of political systems. This approach views political systems with the way they perform as a unit in its environment. However this approach has been criticized by Jean Blondel. He says that the approach does not enlighten one about the aims of the participants. Also he says before this approach can be effective it depends on what one accepts as a function, in view of this it is difficult to achieve complete objectivity. Even though Jean Blondel has criticized this approach it has some strengths ac an approach. This approach is quite attractive for comparative analysis of political systems this is because in most times it deals with the manageable collection of variables and produces a set of standardized categories that can be applied successfully to varied political systems. The greatest strength of this approach lies in the area of pattern maintenance of the system. The comparative approach seeks to show the similarities and  differences among political situations as a source to data of idea formation and classification. An importance of this approach is that in comparing and contrasting events, institutions, processes, experiences and expectations one gets clearer image of thing observed and shaper understanding of the meanings of the political systems being compared. A weakness of this approach is that problem with the comparative method is that research might be not objective and the researcher deliberately chooses countries to show negative or positive moments to proof his/her point of view. For example, let’s consider a hypothesis, that countries with weak trade unions are more economically successful than countries with strong trade unions. Here, trade unionists and, on opposite side, managing directors have a political point to make, so more than likely their conclusions might completely differ. So we should be aware that conclusions are not driven by someone’s motivations and values.

Language barriers are almost immediately known as they begin to argue over who was at fault. While they both speak English the Asian lady simply uses what she feels is direct communication in stating that †Å"She break to fast† and â€Å"Mexicans don’t know how to drive† the direct response from Ria is that she was breaking and she attacks the Asian by making fun of her horrible grammar. Saying â€Å"I blake to fast† She also made sure to state, that it needed to be noted that the Asian didn’t stop on time. Using a direct stereotype showing the barriers to intercultural communication. Stereotyping, can be positive or negative. It is information that a person has gathered about a certain group of people and take that knowledge and over generalizes it and often times makes a negative evaluation about that group. An example would be if a person see’s a show and it conceives a person to be a certain way, and you assume that all people of that race or gender are the exact same. An example of this is how the locksmith was often viewed in the movie. When he was changing the locks at the Cabot’s he was referred to as a thug, a thief, and someone who must be dishonest based on how he looked. He was later perceived as someone who ripped the store owner off when he was actually explaining the situation with the door correctly, yet the language barrier didn’t allow the store owner to understand. The locksmith was nothing as described instead he was an honest man trying to provide for his family. Instead stereotyping, prejudice, and language were all barriers for these individuals not have effective verbal communication. In another seen Officer Ryan calls his father’s insurance company to see if he can see another doctor to get the proper care for an infection that is keeping him up at night. Shaniqua the agent at the company is a black female who is very respectful and as helpful as she can be is attacked by Ryan when he doesn’t get the answers that he wants. He learns her name and states that she is worthless in helping him because she is black. When he comes into the office and still doesn’t get the answer he wants and once again attacks her verbally stating that she has her job because of his father. And that white people are much better qualified for the position. He showed prejudice in the aspect that he feels his race was better and more qualified than hers. Ryan’s perception of the couple is that because they were of darker skin they might be dangerous. At the end of the movie when Hansen gave Georgie a ride, his perception of him caused him to take Georgie’s life. He was a black kid, reaching into his pocket, so he must have been dangerous. Another thing I took notice of in the movie in regards to our book was the use of owning your own thoughts and feelings. Owning your thoughts and feelings are part of the Guidelines for effective verbal communication. People don’t think that the way we speak sometimes makes a person perceive what we are saying a certain way. The text states â€Å"to take responsibility for your feelings, rely on I-language and you-language. The I-language identifies the speakers or perceivers thought and feelings, where the you-language attributes intentions and motives onto another person. (Wood, pg. 89) In â€Å"Crash† When the Thayer’s got home after being pulled over Mrs. Thayer attacked the Mr. by saying you didn’t protect me, you let him molest, you didn’t want pe ople you work with to see us on the news and know you’re black. Later when she went to his job she changed the you’s to I’s yet still didn’t get his full attention in that moment. Another scene at the end of the movie shows Mrs. Cabot explaining to her friend that she is lonely, and angry and that is why she acts out and treats people the way she does. Self-serving bias is when an individual constructs attributions that serve our personal interest. It takes place when a person is inclined to attribute positive actions and successes to internal and stable factors. Though we make assumptions about behaviors that are developed they are not always accurate. (Wood, pg. 52) In my opinion the best example of a self-serving bias in this movie took place when Mrs. Thayer got into an accident and Officer Ryan made the choice to save her. Knowing that he molested her before the accident at a traffic stop, I believe him saving her was his way of telling himself he isn’t a bad person, that saving her would make him better and erase what he had done prior. The same works for when Anthony let the people in the van go free, he could have made money and sold them yet decided that while he is a thief, and a thug if he did this act he would be a better person. Intercultural communication, verbal communication, self-serving bias, stereotyping, and perception play a major role in the movie â€Å"Crash† The director links the many cultures and races and brings them together forming relationships that show struggle and how the situations are dealt with. There’s many positives that come from the situations in the movie as well as the multiple negatives, you can look at the situations and form your own perceptions of what you think of a situation and perceive what should have taken place instead of what did. She returns his sentiments and the two decide to marry. The next day, Romeo and Juliet are married by Friar Lawrence; an event witnessed by Juliet’s Nurse and Romeo’s loyal servant, Balthasar. Juliet’s mother, completely unaware of her daughters secret marriage to Romeo, informs Juliet that she will marry a man named Paris in a few days. Juliet, outraged, refuses to comply. Her parents tell her that she must marry Paris and the Nurse agrees with them. Juliet asks Friar Lawrence for advice, insisting she would rather die than marry Paris. Fr. Lawrence gives Juliet a potion which will make her appear dead and tells her to take it the night before the wedding. He promises to send word to Romeo intending the two lovers be reunited in the Capulet vault. Juliet drinks the potion and everybody assumes that she is dead — including Balthasar, who immediately tells Romeo. Friar Lawrence’s letter fails to reach Romeo, so he assumes that his wife is dead. He rushes to Juliet’s tomb and, in deep grief, drinks a vial of poison. Moments later, Juliet wakes to find Romeo dead and kills herself due to grief. Once the families discover what happened, they finally end their bitter feud.
